The rollers are worn out
The rollers are the only part of a sliding door that moves, and they carry the whole weight of a glass panel that can weigh as much as a person. When they go, everything else starts to wear.

While you wait — please don't
- Do not try to lift the panel out yourself. A sliding glass panel can weigh over a hundred pounds and it shatters if it is set down on a corner or twisted.
- Do not wind the adjustment screws hard against the stop. Stripping them means the whole roller assembly has to come out.
What has probably happened
- Steel wheels and bearings have corroded and stopped turning, so the panel skids on them.
- Plastic or nylon wheels have worn flat or split with age and heat.
- The roller housing has collapsed, so the panel sits down on the track.
- The adjustment screws were wound all the way up to compensate, and there is no adjustment left.
- The rollers are the wrong type for the panel's weight — a heavy or impact panel wants tandem rollers.
What the technician does
- The panel lifted out of the frame by two people with the right grip, so the roller housings can be reached.
- Rollers matched by make and profile — there are hundreds of patterns, and the wrong one sits at the wrong height.
- Steel, stainless or nylon wheels explained honestly for where you live; tandem rollers fitted where the panel is heavy.
- The track inspected while the panel is out, because new rollers on a grooved track wear out fast.
- The panel re-hung, height set with the adjustment screws, and the lock lined up with the keeper.
Why it happens where you live
Coastal humidity and salt are what kill steel rollers: the bearings rust, the wheel stops turning and skids. Technicians in coastal states fit stainless or nylon wheels for that reason. Inland, heat and sand do the same job more slowly.

Questions people ask
- Nylon or steel wheels?
- Nylon runs quieter and does not rust, so it is the usual choice near the coast. Steel and stainless carry more weight, which matters for a heavy or impact-rated panel. The technician will recommend one for your door and your climate.
- What are tandem rollers?
- A roller assembly with two wheels instead of one, so the load is shared. They are used on heavy panels — impact glass, large panels, wide doors — where a single wheel would wear out quickly.
- How do I know the rollers are worn and not the track?
- A groove or a flat spot worn into the track rib is usually the sign of a roller that has been skidding for a while. By then both need attention, and the technician will show you the wear before quoting.
