How heavy is my sliding door panel?
Panel size and glass type give the weight, how many people it takes to lift it, and what that load means for the rollers underneath.

To lift it: two people
Between about 60 and 120 lb a panel is a two-person lift: one each side, lifting together, with the top tilted into the header first.
What this means for the rollers
- Each of the two roller carriages carries about 60 lb. Rollers are rated per wheel or per pair depending on the maker — ask for a rating above that, with margin.
- At this weight single-wheel rollers are usual, as long as they are rated for the load. Tandem rollers are an upgrade, not a necessity.
- A panel that is heavy for its rollers is the one that drags, sags and eventually jumps the track — which is why the weight matters more than the age of the door.
Before anyone lifts it
- The panel is lifted up into the header track first, then the bottom swung clear — never pulled straight out. If the anti-lift blocks are in the header, they come out first.
- Set it down only on its long bottom edge, on padding, leaning against a wall. A corner landing on tile is how tempered glass goes.
- Cracked glass is not lifted at all. Stop and get a technician.
- An impact door is heavier than it looks and its glass carries a product approval. Leave the panel to a technician.
Float glass weighs about 13 lb per square foot per inch of thickness. Frames vary by maker and by how much metal is in the stiles, so the range is the honest number.

How this works
Float glass weighs about 13 lb per square foot per inch of thickness, so a pane's weight is its area times its thickness. An insulated unit is two panes; a laminated pane is two lites and an interlayer; an impact unit is both. The frame adds roughly a pound to a pound and a half per foot of perimeter.
The lifting advice follows the weight bands the trade uses: one person under about 60 lb, two to about 120, three or suction cups above that. Every lift goes up into the header first and down onto a padded edge.
It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It is a guide, not a diagnosis — door makers differ, so check your manufacturer where it says to, and the technician confirms what has actually worn when they see the door.
Questions people ask
- How heavy is a sliding glass door panel?
- A typical 36 by 80 inch insulated panel is around 100 lb; a single-pane one about 60 lb; an impact-rated one 150 lb or more. Glass weighs about 13 lb per square foot per inch of thickness, and the frame adds a pound or so per foot.
- How many people does it take to lift a sliding door panel?
- Up to about 60 lb, one careful adult. Between 60 and 120 lb, two. Over 120 lb, three people or two with glass suction cups. Most insulated and all impact panels are two- or three-person lifts.
- How do you take a sliding glass door off its track?
- The panel is lifted straight up into the header track and the bottom swung clear, after any anti-lift blocks in the header are removed. It is set down on its long bottom edge on padding. Never pulled straight out, and never with cracked glass — that is a technician's job.
- Does the weight matter for the rollers?
- It is the whole point. Each roller carries half the panel. Rollers rated below that flatten, groove the track and let the door sag. Heavy panels want tandem (two-wheel) rollers.
