The track is bent or worn

The track is the rail the rollers ride on. When it is grooved, pitted or bent, the door bumps, drops and eventually jumps off — and new rollers on a bad track wear out in months.

A technician pressing a new stainless steel track cap onto a pitted aluminum sliding door track, the cover half installed over the worn section.

Not sure this is what's wrong? Try the free diagnosis quiz — eight questions about what the door is doing, then the likely causes and what is safe to try.

While you wait — please don't

  • Do not keep running the door through the dip. That is how a panel jumps its track.
  • Do not try to hammer a bent section flat. Aluminum cracks, and then the whole track needs replacing.

What has probably happened

  • Years of a heavy panel on flat rollers have ground the raised rib of the track down into a groove.
  • Salt air and standing water have pitted the aluminum until it is rough and uneven.
  • The track has been bent by something dropped on it, a chair leg, or a door that was forced.
  • The track is loose from the sill, so it lifts and shifts as the door moves.
  • A section is missing or cracked at the end where the panel is parked most of the time.

What the technician does

  • The track assessed along its whole length, not just where it is worst.
  • Snap-on track caps or a stainless steel track cover fitted over a worn or pitted track where the frame is sound — a far smaller job than replacing the door.
  • Bent sections straightened where the metal allows, or the track replaced where it does not.
  • New rollers fitted to suit the new running surface, because old rollers would chew it up again.
  • Panel height reset so it runs level on the repaired track and the lock lines up.

Why it happens where you live

Pitted aluminum is the signature of salt air and standing water, which is why track covers are so common in coastal states. Sand, shell grit and pool-deck debris under a heavy panel grind the rib flat anywhere people walk in from a yard or a beach.

Questions people ask

What is a track cap?
A stainless steel or plastic cover that snaps over the worn rib of the existing track and gives the rollers a new, smooth surface to run on. It is the standard fix for a worn track when the frame is still sound, and it is far quicker than a new door.
Do the rollers need replacing at the same time?
Usually. Rollers that have been running on a grooved track are themselves worn, and they would wear the new surface. The technician quotes both together so you see the full price before deciding.
Can a bent track be fixed without a new door?
Often, if the bend is local and the metal has not cracked. A badly crushed or corroded track may need replacing, and the technician will tell you which it is.
