The lock won't catch or the handle is loose

A patio door that will not lock is an open door. The good news is that the lock itself is often fine — most of the time the panel has sagged and the latch no longer meets the keeper.

Not sure this is what's wrong? Try the free diagnosis quiz — eight questions about what the door is doing, then the likely causes and what is safe to try.

While you wait — please don't

  • Do not force the handle to make the hook catch. The lock body inside the stile breaks, and then the whole lock has to come out.
  • Do not rely on a stick in the track as the only lock. It stops the door sliding but not lifting, so an anti-lift block or a proper lock is the answer.

What has probably happened

  • The panel has dropped on worn rollers, so the latch hook no longer lines up with the keeper on the frame.
  • The mortise lock inside the door's edge has worn or broken, and the handle turns without moving the hook.
  • The handle set has come loose from the stile, or its screws have stripped.
  • The keeper on the frame has worked loose, bent, or been pulled out by a forced door.
  • Corrosion has stiffened the lock spring so the hook will not snap home.

What the technician does

  • The technician checks the roller height first, because an aligned panel often makes the existing lock work again.
  • Mortise locks and handle sets matched to your door's make — there are many patterns, and the hook has to sit at the right height and throw.
  • Keyed locks fitted where you want to lock from outside, and the keeper realigned or replaced.
  • A secondary lock or foot bolt added where the door must stay secure, for example on a ground-floor rental or a pool-side door.
  • Every lock tested through a full close after the panel is adjusted.

Why it happens where you live

Humidity and salt corrode lock springs and keepers, and a door that is opened many times a day sags sooner on its rollers. In the sunbelt the lock usually fails after a season of the door getting harder to close, which is the sag showing itself.

Questions people ask

Can my lock be fixed or does it need replacing?
If the panel has simply sagged, an adjustment brings the hook back to the keeper and the lock is fine. If the lock body is worn or broken, it is replaced with one matched to the door. The technician shows you which before quoting.
Can I get a lock with a key from outside?
Yes. Keyed handle sets and separate keyed locks exist for most doors. Mention it when you send your request so the technician brings the right option.
What is an anti-lift block?
A small block fitted in the header track so the panel cannot be lifted out of its track from outside. It is cheap, and it is the piece most sliding doors are missing.
